Obituary: Mary Elizabeth Small, daughter of Alexander and Phoebia Small, was born December 4, 1833, at a spot located about one mile north of the present site of the town of Wildersville, Henderson County. At the great age of 82 years, 3 months and 8 days, she passed on to rest on last Sunday night, at the hour of 10:40, in the home of her niece, Mrs. N.R. Barham, on Jackson Street. Miss Mary Small had reached the age of twelve years when her father died and her mother was left to her until the year 1864. Just before the Civil War she went to Madison County, and for a number of years made her home with her brother, Willis Small, who had settled there. Later Miss Mary came back to this county and from that time forward resided in the home of her sister, Mrs. E.J. Timberlake, five miles north of Lexington, until Mrs. Timberlake's death in the summer of 1912. After that sad event "Aunt Mary," as many of were allowed to call her, made her constant home with Mrs. Barham, with occasional visits to the family of her nephew, J.D. Timberlake, at Timberlake, and other relatives. On Saturday, February 26, Miss Mary returned from a visit of five weeks to her relatives at Timberlake, after which she took to her bed and was herself not hopeful that we would ever rise from it again. In fact, she seemed to know the end was near and give impression to several wishes and directions which were carried out in connection with her death and burial. In speaking to the character of Miss Mary Small, we can pay her tribute of stating that she despised anything that smacked of hypocrisy. She was as open as the day, and to her, double-dealing, or insincerity of any sort were simply impossible. It was her delight to favor others, even beyond the circle of friends and when any sort of request was proffered, Aunt Mary never rested until she had filled the want. Knowing her to be a woman of good mind and excellent judgment, it was always a pleasure to the writer to be given of her endorsement which often happened. Miss Mary loved her people devotedly, to the last fiber of her being, and she was loyal to the South, and some of her relatives say that she died an reconstructed rebel. The funeral service in the home of Judge N.R. Barham, on Jackson Street, at the hour of 2:30 last Monday, was conducted by the Rev. Fred H. Peeples in a simple way that would have been given Aunt Mary's enchantment and when the aged body had been consigned to Mother Earth, in Beech River Cemetery, Bro. Peeples offered a simple prayer while the assembled relatives and friends bowed their heads in farewell to the one whom many of those present had known all their lives.
