Newton, Ill., May 14. (UP) Charles Gibson, 30, of Benton, was killed yesterday when a truckload of liquid nitroglycerin blew up crossing a bridge on Route 33 east of Newton. The cause of the explosion was not determined. The truck, bridge, and about a quarter of a mile of the highway were demolished. Fifty- and 75-pound slabs of concrete were tossed around like leaves, according to Jasper County Sheriff Albert Parker. A farm house 500 feet from the explosion was smashed with the exception of one far corner room in which Mrs. Dan Yager was working. The accident occurred at 1:30 p.m. Store and house windows in Newton, a mile and a half distant, were shattered and a farmer and his horses in a near-by field were knocked to the ground by the blast.  Gibson was hauling the explosive from Robinson to Benton for use in the oil fields.

This is a copy of the letter written by Charles James Gibson's parents to Mr. and Mrs. Felix Smith of Milan, Tennessee:

May 28, 1943,

Mr. & Mrs. Felix Smith & all the dear children,

We sure have some bad news to write you all. Our poor boy Charley got killed, May the 13th of this month. He had went to Robinson, Ill., and loaded 7 hundred quarts of nitroglycerin and had got 23 miles from the factory on a cement highway. He hit a broken place in the highway in the wet weather. The cement had broken and he did not know it. He had not been over that part of the road in some time so the truck was heavy loaded. So it hit that broken cement and the jolt caused it to blow up. It blew out 70 feet of the pavement and blew it out 16 feet deep. It happened in two miles of a town, Newton, Ill., a county seat. The whole town was out there within 2 hours after it happened. They searched every inch of the ground for a half mile all around. They found in all maybe 2 gallons. They found one little piece of his head and one little finger. The rest was little bits of his flesh. Darling, it is awful but the poor boy did not suffer one bit and he was prepared to go, thank God. Well, dear, we shipped the remains back home to Stanton, Texas. We shipped the remains back in a metal coffin in a steel vault. We had services out there and back here too. We brought Vance, his wife, and the 3 children back here with us. She will be with us for a while and then she will go back to Benton, Ill., to wind up her business and ship her things back here. Well, dear, 5 of us went out there. Mother and I and Carl and Marion and wife. It happened at one 30 o'clock and we got the news at 5:30 that evening and at 9 that night we were on our way. We made the trip in 28 hours. We had the doctor with mother out there. Well, dear people, take care of yourselves. Tell all of our people about it. And tell them to write to us.

From your loving uncle and aunt and our family.
