Family of Daniel T. ROSS (3) & Elizabeth SMITH

8. Mary ROSS. Born about 1812 in Greenville District, South Carolina. At the age of 35, Mary died in Carroll County, Tennessee about 1847. Alias/AKA: "Polly".

Mary married Samuel BLACK, son of Jacob Bennett BLACK Junior (1787-1859) & Elizabeth ? (1790-). Born in 1810 in Greenville District, South Carolina. At the age of 45, Samuel died in Carroll County, Tennessee in 1855.

They had the following children:
31 i. Caroline (1834-1907)
ii. William Lafayette. Born on 11 Mar 1843 in Tennessee. At the age of 84, William Lafayette died in Carroll County, Tennessee on 14 May 1927.

William Lafayette Black is one of Milan's most highly esteemed and beloved citizens. He is a veteran of the Civil war and has resided in this community since the close of that conflict. A native of Carroll county, his birth occurred on the 11th of March, 1843. He is a son of Samuel and Polly (Ross) Black, who were natives of Tennessee but were living in Texas upon the outbreak of the war. William Lafayette Black received what little education he had opportunity to get in the public schools of Carroll county and removed with his brother to Texas before the Civil war. Upon the outbreak of the war he was quick to put all personal interests aside and in 1862 he went to Little Rock, Arkansas, enlisting in the First Arkansas Infantry Regiment. He served throughout the war, participating in most of the strategic battles. At the close of the war he found that all of his people were dead or lost and he returned to Gibson county, locating near Milan. He has since resided here and has achieved substantial success as a farmer and truck grower. Mr. Black is retired now and a few years ago he divided his large estate among his four children. His friends in this community are legion and he spends a great deal of his time talking with them of war days, the period of reconstruction, etc.

9. James ROSS. Born in 1814 in Greenville District, South Carolina. Resided in 6th District, Carroll County, Tennessee in 1850.

James married Adaline BLACK. Born about 1818 in Tennessee.

They had the following children:
i. Elizabeth L.. Born about 1838 in Tennessee.

ii. Matilda C.. Born about 1840 in Tennessee.

iii. Daniel. Born on 30 Sep 1843 in Tennessee. At the age of 20, Daniel died in Chattanooga, Tennessee on 30 Sep 1863.

Daniel had no children.

iv. Joseph A.. Born about 1844 in Tennessee.

v. Jessee F.. Born about 1848 in Tennessee.

vi. Thomas. Born about 1849 in Tennessee.


10. Joseph Jackson ROSS. Born on 17 Mar 1817 in Greenville County, South Carolina. At the age of 77, Joseph Jackson died in Pittsboro, Calhoun County, Mississippi on 9 Sep 1894. Buried in 1894 in Antioch Cemetery, Calhoun County, Mississippi.

Joseph Jackson married Fereby H. OAKLEY. Born on 30 Mar 1818 in Carroll County, Tennessee. At the age of 70, Fereby H. died in Pittsboro, Calhoun County, Mississippi on 22 Nov 1888. Buried in 1888 in Antioch Cemetery, Calhoun County, Mississippi.

They had the following children:
i. Washington Lafayette. Born on 26 Dec 1840 in Carroll County, Tennessee. At the age of 21, Washington Lafayette died in Columbus, Kentucky on 9 Nov 1862. Buried in 1862 in Antioch Cemetery, Calhoun County, Mississippi.

iii. Martha Jane. Born in 1844 in Tennessee.

Martha Jane married Robert McDonald HARROD.

iv. David A.. Born on 17 Nov 1846 in Tennessee. At the age of 2, David A. died in Calhoun County, Mississippi on 22 Jan 1849. Buried in 1849 in Antioch Cemetery, Calhoun County, Mississippi.

v. Jesse Walsh. Born on 4 Jan 1850 in Calhoun County, Mississippi. At the age of 77, Jesse Walsh died in Calhoun County, Mississippi on 4 May 1927.

Jesse Walsh married Lucretia KILGORE. Born on 19 Jun 1859 in Mississippi. At the age of 51, Lucretia died in Mississippi on 28 Mar 1911. Alias/AKA: "Dink".

vi. Fereby Ann. Born about 1852 in Calhoun County, Mississippi.

vii. James Frederick. Born on 14 Jun 1855 in Calhoun County, Mississippi. At the age of 77, James Frederick died in Calhoun County, Mississippi on 13 Dec 1932. Buried in 1932 in Chapel Hill Cemetery, Calhoun County, Mississippi.

James Frederick married Annie Alice LITTEN. Born on 23 Oct 1868 in Mississippi. At the age of 55, Annie Alice died in Mississippi on 12 Oct 1924.

viii. Andrew Jackson. Born on 2 Aug 1858 in Calhoun County, Mississippi. At the age of 9, Andrew Jackson died in Calhoun County, Mississippi on 22 Oct 1867. Buried in 1867 in Antioch Cemetery, Calhoun County, Mississippi.


11. Lucinda ROSS. Born in 1819 in South Carolina.

Lucinda first married Isaac SMITH.

On 16 Nov 1843 when Lucinda was 24, she second married Edward STEWART, son of John C. STEWART ( 1796-1850) & Lettie ?, in Carroll County, Tennessee. Born about 1824 in South Carolina.

Constable, 7th District, Carroll County, 1860.

STATE OF TEXAS, COUNTY OF NAVARRO

On this 11th day of May AD 1891 personally appeared before me, J.J. Wilson Clerk of the County Court, a court of record within and for this county and state aforesaid, Edward Stewart, aged 66 years a resident of the County of Navarro and State of Texas, who, being sworn according to law declares that he is the identical Edward Stewart, who was enrolled as Captain in Co C, Harrison's Battalion Paducah Volunteers on or about 1st day of August 1863 at Corinth, Mississippi which Company and battalion was attached to 7th Reg Tenn. Volunteers, commanded by Col Isaac R. Hawkins. That he was engaged in Special Scout service and remained in Command of said Co until about Dec.1863 at Union City Tenn. He was attacked with Varrioloid (light case of smallpox) and left Company in Command of J. West Neely (John Wesley Neely believed to be son of Andrew Neely whose grandmother was Agnes Stewart) that he was in Command of a squad of scouts connected with the Command of Milton Hardy (Milton Hardy) was later shot while trying to kidnap the Gov. of Tenn) and remained in command of said Squad until the Battle of Paducah, KY that he afterward enrolled as Sgt. in Capt Sam Hawkins Co. I, 7th Tenn Regt. and Command of Col Isaac R. Hawkins on March 8th 1865 at Paducah KY and remained in said Co until 9th day of August 1865. When he was honorably discharged by reason of close of the war. That while in service above named and was sent to private hospital at the residence of a Mr. Goodloe and remained for about 35 days and was also attacked with Rheumatism which disease has afflicted him with more or less severity from that time until the present moment. That on or about February 1864 and at or near Johnsonville Tenn while on duty he became ruptured in left groin from which affliction he has never entirely recovered. - and is cause given? of which and of rheumatism he has ceased about entirely from any kind of manual labor or active exercise even on horseback. That in the spring of 1864 he was healed at private house of Dr. Thompson of Paducah KY that since said service he has been treated by the following named physicians and surgeons, Joe McCall MD, W.N. Murray MD, of Huntingdon and by Dr. Robt Laws of Wildersville Tenn. and by Dr. D.L. Laws of Clarksburg Tenn and by others and since coming to Texas in 1886 he has been treated by Drs. Jno F. and Wm. Starley and in Dr. I.N. and J.S. Suttle of Corsicana Texas. That since said service above named he has not been employed in the Military or Naval Service of the United States. That since leaving said service this applicant has resided in Carroll County, Tenn. until 1876 and in Henderson CO 1876 to 1880 and from 1881 until 1886 he resided in Faulkner Co Arkansas and since 1886 until the present time he has resided in this Navarro, CO Texas, and that his occupation when able to do anything has been that of a farmer and mechanic.

That prior to his entry into the service above named he was a man of sound, physical health, being when enrolled a farmer. That he is now totally disabled from obtaining his subsistence by manual labor by reason of his disabilities above described and of partial loss of eyesight and of heart trouble resulting from the disabilities received in the service of the United States. He therefore makes this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the invalid pension roll of the United States.

He hereby appoints J.M. Douglas of Corsicana state of Texas his true and lawful attorney to prosecute his claim to whom he agrees to pay the sum of twenty five Dollars when a pension is allowed him for said service. That he has made application NO 974730 for a pension under the act of June 27 1890. Signed Edward Stewart Also personally appeared R.W. Walton residing in Corsicana Texas and Persons whom I certify to be respectable and entitled to credit and who being by one duly foregoing sign his to the foregoing declaring that they have every reason to believe from the appearance of said claimant and their acquaintance with him, that he is the identical person he represents himself to be and that they have no interest in the prosecution of his claim.

12. Catherine ROSS. Born about 1820 in Greenville District, South Carolina. At the age of 24, Catherine died in Carroll County, Tennessee in 1844. Alias/AKA: "Caty".

On 22 Jan 1842 when Catherine was 22, she married Thomas Jefferson STEWART, son of John C. STEWART ( 1796-1850) & Lettie ?, in Carroll County, Tennessee. Born in 1821 in South Carolina. Resided in 8th District, Henderson County, Tennessee. in 1850.

Military: Thomas Jefferson served in Company F, 8th Cavalry, Newsom's Regiment, CSA. Joined at Jackson, Tennessee. Believed to have died in the Civil War.

They had one child:

13. Nancy ROSS. Born in 1827 in Greenville District, South Carolina. Resided in 7th District, Carroll County, Tennessee in 1870.

On 13 Aug 1855 when William A. was 26, he married Frances BLAKE, daughter of ? BLAKE, in Carroll County, Tennessee. Born on 22 Jan 1827 in South Carolina. At the age of 84, Frances died in Carroll County, Tennessee on 24 Feb 1911. Buried in 1911 in Palestine Cemetery, Carroll County, Tennessee. On 13 May 1863 when Jacob A. was 25, he married Martha Jane HARRIS, daughter of ? HARRIS & Laura ? (1812-). Born on 30 Aug 1843 in Henderson County, Tennessee. At the age of 74, Martha Jane died in Carroll County, Tennessee on 14 Sep 1917. Buried in 1917 in Palestine Cemetery, Carroll County, Tennessee. Resided in 8th District, Henderson County, Tennessee. in 1850.
