Deborah Sue Wilkins is a full blooded Lumbee Indian with a Masters Degree in Education.

They had one child:
i. Gabriel Nino. Born on 19 Jul 1976 in Chapel Hill, Orange County, North Carolina. At the age of 11, Gabriel Nino died in Snow Camp, Alamance County, North Carolina on 26 May 1988. Buried in May 1988 in Pembroke, Robeson County, North Carolina.

Gabriel was an outstanding student with an IQ of over 165 and was bright and alert and possessing a quick and sometimes dry wit. He was athletically slender with dark hair and deep blue eyes and had the complexion of an almond cookie. His mother was a full blooded Lumbee Indian from Pembroke NC. Tragically, Gabe was struck by a speeding car while crossing to school a month and a half shy of his 12th birthday. In a school zone, he was thrown in excess of 130 feet and was killed instantly.

The following was written by his father about Gabe:
"Whatever the effect of Gabriel's training and background, it worked. So many were involved. He liked to climb trees; he never met a stranger; he saw the best and worst in people; he traveled well; he listened well; he sang well and knew all the words. The world was funny. 'Suffer not the little children to come unto me,' the God-Man said. Gabriel Nino Bates -- little boy spirit -- announces the coming of Christ. 'Gabriel, come' -- he always did."
