On 17 May 1863 when Sarah Jane was 25, she married Porter GIBSON, son of Roger GIBSON (ca1769-1850) & ? ?, in Carroll County, Tennessee. Born on 23 Feb 1819 in Henderson County, Tennessee. It is believed that he returned home to recover from his wounds and never returned to duty. Porter was farmer and shoemaker. His home had only one window. During the Civil War, there was a serious problem with "Bushwhackers". Porter frequently experienced raids on his crops, shoes, as well as the hogs he had raised for family consumption. On one occasion, he related to his grandson he had been on the outlook for such activity and had his gun ready. "Nary a-one got away", he told his grandson. Another time the bushwhackers broke into his home, assaulting and torturing him by holding his feet in the fireplace. Porter's wife, Sarah Jane, got a shotgun and sneaked into the house and forced the men to leave. Granddaughter, Anna Pinckley, said that she had seen the scars on her grandfather's feet. After the end of the Civil War, anyone who had served on the Southern side was required to take an oath of allegiance. Porter took his Oath of Allegiance to the Union on 25 May 1865. He could not read or write. He made his mark and reported his residence to be in Carroll County, Tennessee. Otto Gibson, of Three Oaks, Michigan, grandson of Furman Gibson and great-grandson of Porter Gibson, has in his possession the sword that belonged to Porter. Porter's physical description from his military papers describe him as having a dark complexion, dark hair, hazel eyes, and height of 5 feet 7 inches. In his old age, Porter went blind due to the use of red bark and aloes in the tanning process he used for making shoes. They had the following children:
