Research: Friday, April 19, 1912: The same week that nearly 2000 unfortunate souls lost their lives in the sinking of the Titanic, one Carroll County resident was having better luck. Jim Kee was reported as finding 41 silver half dollars buried on his property while digging post holes. Since all the coins dated from 1844 to 1861, Kee speculated that they were hidden sometime during the Civil War. He added that he planned to a lot more digging when he found the time. Fenton Otis Olive was fatally injured in a cotton gin.

Obituary: Finton Otis Olive was born March the 3rd, 1895, departed this life October the 18th, 1902, age seven years, seven months and fifteen days. Finton was the son of John H. and Jessie Olive and was their oldest child that was living. He leaves a father, mother and one sister, two brothers to mourn the loss of a dearly beloved son and brother. He was the idol and light of the home. He was a dutiful child; a good Christian. He joined the M.E. Church, South, at Rock Springs when he was only five years, seven months and fifteen days old. H e was attentive to and talked a great deal about his church. He made his own selection as to the denomination he would join for he is the only one of his family that belongs to any church. He had no one to lead him but the Great Spirit that was able to carry his little Spirit to that place where there is no sin or anything else to harm him, but all is joy and peace and happiness forever. So I can say to father, mother, brothers, and sisters, aunts and uncles weep not for Finton but say, like David of old, he cannot come back to us, but we can go to him.

Fades the lovely blooming flower
Smiling solace on an hour
Soon our transient comforts flay
Pleasure only blooms to die
Lovely Finton how brief thy stay
Pain or grief no more to bear
Pillowed on a Savior's breast
Finton sleep and safely rest
When the joyful summons come
Rise and soar to heaven, your home
That once loved form now cold and dead
Each mournful though employs.
And nature's weeps, my comfort fied,
and withered in ally my joys,
Hope look beyond the bounds of time
When what we now deplore
Finton will rise in immortal prime
and bloom to fade no more.
