LEXINGTON - Julia Dodd, a farmer's daughter who hated cotton picking as a child, didn't mind the fuss made over her 103rd birthday celebration at her home here. "Miss Julia", as she is called by her friends, is one of nearly 100 home-bound elderly and disabled persons reached in eight counties of West Tennessee by the Chickasaw Area Development Commission's nutrition program. Thursday was special for "Miss Julia". Not only was her lunch delivered hot from the kitchen of Morrison's Cafeteria in Jackson as it is every Monday through Friday, but cafeteria employee Ethel Thomas baked her a chocolate and vanilla-iced birthday cake. In addition, "Miss Julia" received personal congratulations from Lexington Mayor Ed Bailey and letter from U.S. Rep. Robin Beard, R-Tenn, and State Rep. Dale Kelley, R-Huntingdon. The Benton County native, who has lived here 17 years, said the nutrition program that feeds her and hundreds of other people elderly people "is just fine". But more than the meal, Miss Julia said she enjoyed the company. She quickly let her birthday guests know it. "I'm here everyday if you want to come back and visit", she said. Those who are able to go to one of the projects 13 nutrition sites in the eight counties may enjoy lunch with other elderly people, she said. And, those who are home-bound get the lunch delivered to their doorsteps by volunteers. "I really enjoy it', said Miss Julia, who contributed her long life to her physical stamina. "I've always had good health and I'm stout", she explained. "I was stout when I was young. We lived on a farm and I hoed corn and picked cotton. boy, how I hated that cotton picking", the woman said with a chuckle. Miss Julia is the mother of seven children, but she's long lost count of the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Among the 81 who had lunch Thursday at the center was Lyman Armstrong, who received a certificate of appreciation form the CA DC. He's the volunteer who has delivered meals to Miss Julia for the past two years".
