Obituary: Killed by Accident July 4th: A most unfortunate sequel to the Fourth of July celebration held in Lexington last Saturday was the accidental shooting of Green Carey and Deputy Sheriff S.E. Fesmire, which occurred about 11:30 o'clock on the southwest corner of the Public Square in a scuffle, which ensued as Chief of Police, J.H. Davis was taking a resisting prisoner to the Mayor's office, following his arrest for disorderly conduct and intoxication. The prisoner under arrest at the time Mr. Davis's gun was discharged was Ernest Lindsey, who recently returned from serving a term in the state penitentiary fro being connected in some way with the robbing of the Medina Bank. He was drinking, it is said, and had been warned to leave the streets before he got into trouble. He objected and according to Mr. Davis, several of his friends collected on the corner and advised him to resist arrest. He finally agreed, however, to go to City Hall but changed his mind and began to fight. Mr. Davis then knocked him down. His wife and children began to scream and the crowd surged in that direction. Mr. Fesmire, seeing the difficulty under which Mr. Davis was laboring, ran down to try to help him, and reached the scene of the fight just as Mr. Davis was in the act of drawing his gun. In some manner the gun was discharged, the bullet striking Lindsey, Mr. Fesmire, and Mr. Carey. Mr. Davis says he had no seen Mr. Fesmire and would not have taken out his gun if he had known another officer was present to help him, but from remarks being made about him he thought an effort was being organized to take his prisoner away from him and he reached for his weapon. He has no idea of how the gun went off. His prisoner was struggling, the crowd was jostling around, and in some manner the gun was discharged. The bullet made a slight wound on Lindsey, went through Fesmire's wrist and struck Carey in the abdomen, tearing through the intestines at several points. He staggered across to the bench in front of the Elk Drug Store and bystanders state that he said at the time he was killed. Little hope was estimated for Mr. Carey's recovery, but he was taken immediately to Jackson to the Webb-Williamson hospital in the Wright-Timberlake ambulance, accompanied by members of his friends and Mr. Davis who remained until morning, returning several times later and there at the time of Mr. Carey's death. Lindsey's trial before Mayor Holland was set for Tuesday afternoon but upon request was postponed until Thursday afternoon. Mr. Green Carey, who died July 10th, was born March 12, 1883, the son of William Carey and Tillie Myracle Carey. He had lived in the county his entire life and was known as a hard-working farmer. He made a crop for several years on the Hardin farm and had worked more recently with J. W. Wright. He married Sarah Elizabeth Duke, who survives him with four children, William, Otha, and two smaller ones. The burial was at Duke Graveyard.

Green married Sarah Elizabeth DUKE, daughter of J. DUKE & Sarah ?. Born in 1888. At the age of 50, Sarah Elizabeth died in Bargerton, Henderson County, Tennessee on 8 Aug 1938. Buried in Aug 1938 in Duke Memorial Cemetery, Henderson County, Tennessee.
