13. John Marshall MEALS. Born on 25 May 1825 in Madison County, Alabama. At the age of 63, John Marshall died in 1889.

Elizabeth Morrow Meals died after the 1864 birth of her son Thomas and before 22 January 1867 when her husband, John M. Meals, married Margaret Sharp Carruthers, a former sister-in-law of Elizabeth Morrow Meals. This wife died 22 March 1884. John Marshall Meals had no children by his third wife. Mary McFarland Mays may have had property in Gibson County for Meals' removal from Henderson County coincided with that marriage. They lived in the area now generally closed to the public on which the Milan Ordinance Depot has been located since World War II. The farm John Meals gave his daughter Parallee bordered at that time with property he held in his own name. Later his sons, Fate (as Lafayette was know) and William, were located close by under a similar arrangement as Parallee's probably on the Meals land mentioned in Parallee's deed. His daughter, Amanda Pearson, was given property back in Henderson County, and the children of his deceased daughter, Louvisa Milam, were deeded property in Gibson County. Josephine was also given land.

John Marshall Meals was said to have been killed by falling timber on his farm. His estate was administered in Gibson County. Family tradition has it that he gave each of his children five thousand dollars cash in addition to their earlier land gifts. John Marshall Meals lived to bury his son Thomas and his daughter Ida at Friendship Cemetery near his farm. He buried his second wife Margaret in Bethlehem Cemetery on the edge of the Morrow farm on the Henderson and Madison County line. There once had been a Cumberland Presbyterian Church at the cemetery. Margaret's former husband, James W. Carruthers, who had been married earlier (28 May 1846) to Mary Ann Morrow, was buried at Pleasant Hill with John M. Meals.

Since Meals buried Margaret at Bethlehem, he likely also buried his first wife, Elizabeth E. Morrow, in the cemetery of her parents church. He may have expected to be buried there in time himself. The stones of the elder Morrows, Mary Ann Morrow Carruthers and Margaret Carruthers Meals are intact but so far no stone has been found for Elizabeth, although she is probably buried there beside her parents and her sister.

His third wife may have chosen Pleasant Hill for John Meals's final resting place, but she is not buried there with him. Presumably she is buried somewhere with Mr. Henderson, whom she married after Meals's death. John Marshall Meals lies alone under an obelisk on a hill commanding a view of the interstate highway which divides Henderson County. Other Meals are buried there also.

On 24 Dec 1846 when John Marshall was 21, he first married Elizabeth E. MORROW, daughter of William B. MORROW (1795-1859) & Elizabeth HUTCHINSON (1795-1857), in Madison County, Tennessee.
