Obituary: Carroll County native, veteran, and longtime Nashville educator Carl K. Ross died Thursday, June 24, at the age of 74 from complications from cancer. Services were held Saturday at the Crieve Hall Church of Christ, where he was a member, and he was buried in Harpeth Hills Memory Gardens. Ross was born in Carroll County and graduated from Clarksburg High School. According to his surviving wife, Eloise Rushing Ross, Mr. Ross loved Carroll County and the Midway Community where he grew up and helped his parents on the family farm. She said he also loved playing baseball on a McLemoresville community team back in grammar school. After high school and service in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Ross went on to earn degrees from David Lipscomb College and George Peabody College. During his life, Ross worked and served as a Church of Christ preacher, teacher, principal, consultant, motivational speaker, and carpenter. Ross resigned from ministerial work when he became in great demand as a speaker in education--a career that took him to all 50 states and Holland. After retiring in 1992, he continued to do work for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, traveling to various schools and confirming their yearly progress reports. He also worked for David Lipscomb College for several years as supervisor of student teachers. Ross has been hailed as a visionary in the field of education, and he gained national attention when he transformed the Dodson Elementary School in Nashville into one of the first schools in the country where both teachers and students used computers--though he never had any formal computer training. In addition to his wife, Mr. Ross is survived by daughter, Betsy (Tom) Ketsdever; son, Brian Ross; grandson, Nathan Ketsdever; sisters, Charline Tucker, Sue Davis, and Retha Edwards; and brothers, Bill Ross and Jesse Ray Ross.
