Obituary: Lexington, March 1, 1886: Lexington was startled Saturday afternoon by the sad intelligence that about 10 o'clock on the morning of that day Thomas Fesmire killed himself. He had been partially crazy for the past few days, and it was supposed he was in that condition when he committed the rash act. A few days before he was in town and called for morphine, which the druggist refused to supply for the reason that Mr. F. declined to state the use for which he desired the drug. He then went home and at once loaded his shot-gun with slugs, and on Saturday morning, when none of his family were indoors, he took the gun and laid it on the bed, then kneeling and placing the muzzle to the side of his head, discharged the load by means of a broomstick, blowing off the whole top of his head, fragments of the mutilated head striking the ceiling. Mr. Fesmire lived 4 or 5 miles north of Lexington, and for years had been a pillar of the Methodist Church, an active, live Mason, and for years, a Justice of the Peace. He was living happily with his fourth wife and leaves a number of children and grandchildren and a large number of other relatives. He died in his 66th year. It is supposed that financial troubles caused mental aberrations and led to his unnatural and tragic death, as recently he had deeded away his home and all the land he owned, leaving himself penniless and homeless in his old age, to satisfy his creditors. Bro. Peeples will preach the sermon at Antioch. Thomas Elijah first married Malona Margaret DUNN, daughter of William DUNN (1800-) & Celia STUTTS (1802-). Born on 28 Jul 1827 in North Carolina.
