Family of James A. MEALS (27) & Martha COFFMAN (34)

70. Lewis Marshall MEALS. Born on 27 Dec 1841 in Alabama. At the age of 66, Lewis Marshall died in Alabama on 29 Jan 1908. Buried in 1908 in Legg Cemetery, Limestone County, Alabama.

On 22 Jan 1861 when Lewis Marshall was 19, he married Nancy Jane LEGG (46) , daughter of James LEGG (18) (1809-) & Celia McKINNEY. Born on 7 Mar 1842 in Alabama. At the age of 71, Nancy Jane died on 24 Jan 1914. Buried in Jan 1914 in Legg Cemetery, Limestone County, Alabama.

They had the following children:
83 i. James Harrison (1865-1937)
ii. Martha Ann. Born on 28 Mar 1869. At the age of 80, Martha Ann died on 5 Aug 1949. Alias/AKA: "Aunt Bettye".

On 12 Nov 1893 when Martha Ann was 24, she married Walter CHRISTOPHER, in Limestone County, Alabama.
iii. Sarah Ellen. Born on 8 Apr 1872. At the age of 78, Sarah Ellen died on 19 Dec 1950. Alias/AKA: "Aunt Babe".

On 24 Oct 1909 when Sarah Ellen was 37, she married Robert F. TENNISON.
iv. Adoz. Born on 23 Feb 1876 in Bethel, Tennessee. At the age of 79, Adoz died on 2 Jul 1955.

On 14 Nov 1900 when Adoz was 24, he married Eugenia COFFMAN.
v. Alice. Born on 26 Jan 1879. At the age of 73, Alice died on 18 Nov 1952. Buried in 1952 in Legg Cemetery, Limestone County, Alabama.

Never married.
vi. Samuel Earl. Born on 21 Jan 1882. At the age of 28, Samuel Earl died on 12 Feb 1910.

Never married.
vii. Mary. Born on 25 Apr 1888. At the age of 54, Mary died on 7 Apr 1943.

On 25 Jan 1917 when Mary was 28, she married Lonner Gaston SMITH.

71. Mary Elizabeth MEALS. Born on 15 Jul 1848. At the age of 65, Mary Elizabeth died in Limestone County, Alabama on 26 Jan 1914. Buried in 1014 in Athens City Cemetery, Limestone County, Alabama.

On 8 Jan 1867 when Mary Elizabeth was 18, she married James Calvin Jones GORDON, son of David GORDON & Elizabeth JONES, in Bride's residence, solemnized by A.D. Ray, Justice of the Peace. Born on 6 Jan 1845 in Giles County, Tennessee. At the age of 87, James Calvin Jones died in Athens, Limestone County, Alabama on 23 Feb 1932. James Calvin Jones served in the Artillery Company of Captain John J. Ward and continued until paroled 26 May, 1865, at Decatur, Alabama, under orders given by General Forrest.

He was the sheriff of Limestone County, Alabama. At that time, the jail was in a two-story building on Madison Street. The Sheriff and his family lived downstairs while the prisoners were kept overhead.

Military: James enlisted into the military at 16 - was a member of Company A, Ward's Battery. On Sunday, April 16, 1865, James Calvin claimed to have fired one of the last shots of the war in the South from he east end of the Upper Bridge at Columbus, Georgia.

From a newspaper clipping by Bob Dunnavant: "He was seven when his mother died and he was sent to Athens to live with his grandfather, Thomas K. Gordon. He was wounded in the battle of Kennesaw Mountain. James returned home to find his step-mother and children in an almost starved condition and settled temporarily in Athens. His father was in prison in Nashville, Tennessee, having been taken prisoner at Selma and refusing to take the oath of allegiance to the United States.

They had the following children:
120 i. Margaret Elizabeth Olivia (1867-1941)
ii. Minnie Ha Ha. Born on 21 May 1871 in Athens, Limestone County, Alabama. At the age of 80, Minnie Ha Ha died in Athens, Limestone County, Alabama on 9 Feb 1952. Buried in 1952 in Athens City Cemetery, Limestone County, Alabama.

Minnie Ha Ha married Webster JONES.

No children were produced from this marriage.

122 iv. Cruse Ewell (1878-1956)
123 v. Robert Benjamin Harris (1882-1949)
vi. Mary A.. Born on 25 May 1887. At the age of 47, Mary A. died in Limestone County, Alabama on 9 Mar 1935. Buried in 1935 in Athens City Cemetery, Limestone County, Alabama.

Mary A. married James JONES.
