Inscription on wife's headstone concerning her husband Elijah Bradfield. "In Memory of E.L. ,Husband of Elizabeth Bradfield Born November 22, 1826 Died August 16, 1864 In the Andersonville Prison Aged 37 years, 9 mos., 24 days He belonged to CO C 7th Tenn Reg US Cavalry Vol" Military: Elijah Lewis Bradfield enlisted into the Union Army on the 5 September 1862, at Jackson, Madison County, Tennessee. He joined Company C, 7th Tennessee Cavalry Volunteers (US) to serve for three years or for the duration of the war. He was furnished a horse and equipment. His commanding officer was Captain A.H. Hays. The mission of this regiment was dedicated to provide security for the Mobile and Ohio Railroad and the Memphis and Charleston Railroad. Additional missions included capturing Union deserters and stragglers, preventing the Confederate forces from reforming, and destroying guerilla bands. Records show that Private Elijah Bradfield was captured by forces of General Nathan Bedford Forrest at Trenton, Gibson County, Tennessee, on 20 December 1862, but was paroled. Nearly all the regiment was captured by the forces of General Nathan Bedford Forrest at Union City, Obion County, Tennessee, on 24 March 1864. The 7th Cavalry prisoners were sent to Andersonville, a major Confederate prison, located in Andersonville, Georgia. The prisoners were treated very inhumane. Their clothing was inadequate and the suffered from the elements. Their food was scanty and inadequate and many died from starvation and diarrhea. A man might enter strong and robust but within a few months become a skinny and haggard wreck. The "body" lice were thick upon these weather beaten victims and sucked the very life's blood from them. Conditions were such that the lice could not be destroyed. Exposure, starvation, cruel treatment, and lack of medical care caused men to die on every hand. According to Auburn Powers in his book "History of Henderson County", published in 1930, the 7th Regiment lost during its service, eight enlisted men and one officer mortally wounded. The regiment lost 328 because of disease. Private Elijah Bradfield's military records state that he died on 31 July 1864 after having been admitted to the prison hospital that same day. Other records show he died on 16 August 1864. More than 13,000 men died there during the period of 1864-1865. The Prison Director, Captain Henry Wirz, was hanged after being sentenced to die by a military court martial after the war. The site is now a National Monument.
