I am not sure who did the research on the following. However, I claim no credit for it.

Jerry McDaniel

Two committees of the 50th Congress investigated James W Bowman's claim to be deserving of a pension due to disability from having been shot by Confederates near his home while on leave. Confederates in the area, and the doctor for 7 TN, refuted his claim and insisted he was not on leave but was AWOL and robbing Confederates in the area.

Synopsis of the testimony of James W Bowman in his own defense.
He learned that his mother's house had been burned, (1863) leaving his mother and sister in starving condition. (His father, he says, was at Clinton, TN with the 2TN Mounted Infantry at the time.) This sister was named Eliza J. She says she tried to escape with the family Bible but that the rebels took it but she managed to talk them out of the family pages. (Bible pages in evidence. James W Bowman b. January 22, 1836; Eliza J Bowman July 23 1841; Jonathan Bowman January 13 1869, Robert A Bowman October 8 1870. James W Bowman and Eliza J Lewis was married Febuary 23, 1868. I suppose there were other pages with Simeon's family on it but they were not needed as evidence.)
James W says he got permission to go home about 25 of July, 1864. He was at Paducah KY at the time. Other people who came along: Dan Freeman, S. P. Watson, Monroe Hays, Jn W Harrington and Wm P Essary. All had "suffering families." Freeman and Bowman were together, sleeping out in the woods near the house and were shot by rebels and left for dead. His sister dressed his wounds. His father came home 3 or 4 days later. Eight days after shooting James says he was taken on a sheet to the TN river, put on a canoe, taken to Johnsonville then put on a steamship and taken back to Paducah to hospital. Sister Eliza testified as well. She had a son named Duncan and a little girl named Margaret White was there as well the night James W was shot.

Synopsis of the Rebel's story of what happened.
Witnesses said he was shot while committing a theft. They caught someone named Brodie and another named King for a robbery of someone named Jonathan Sparks (money and leather). Brodie and King said that Bowman and Freeman stole it. The rebels then found Bowman and Freeman and shot them.

Settlement:
Congressional committees said they thought George Alexander, a pension attorney who did legal work for James W's pension, had become upset with James W for not paying him the fee he asked so he got people to testify that James W was shot while stealing.
There are pages and pages of this. Honestly, the testimony sometimes looks like James W and Freeman were guilty. Probably they were getting back at rebels for burning the house, etc. He got his pension, however.
