24. Sylvester J. ALTOM. Born on 29 Sep 1866 in Henderson County, Tennessee. At the age of 79, Sylvester J. died on 23 Jan 1946. Buried in Jan 1946 in Parkers Crossroads Cemetery, Henderson County, Tennessee. Resided in District 15, Henderson County, Tennessee in 1870. Resided in Wildersville, Henderson County, Tennessee in 1940.

Sylvester J. first married Mary Isabella DERRYBERRY, daughter of Eli F. DERRYBERRY (Jan 1847-) & Carolyn Matilda AUTREY (6 Nov 1842-1920). Born in 1869 in Henderson County, Tennessee. At the age of 57, Mary Isabella died in 1926. Buried in 1926 in Parkers Crossroads Cemetery, Henderson County, Tennessee.

They had the following children:

54 ii. Eugenia (1890-1915)
iii. Nevie. Born in 1893 in Henderson County, Tennessee. At the age of 34, Nevie died in 1927. Buried in 1927 in Bible Grove Cemetery, Henderson County, Tennessee.

Nevie married Blain HAYS. Born in 1890. At the age of 35, Blain died in 1925. Buried in 1925 in Bible Grove Cemetery, Henderson County, Tennessee.

Blaine and Nevie had no children.

Sylvester J. second married Linda Jane ?. Born in 1863. At the age of 88, Linda Jane died in Lexington, District 10, Henderson County, Tennessee in May 1951. Buried in May 1951 in Oak Grove Cemetery, Henderson County, Tennessee.

25. Lizzie M. ALTOM. Born on 5 May 1869 in Henderson County, Tennessee. At the age of 71, Lizzie M. died on 27 Nov 1940. Resided in District 15, Henderson County, Tennessee in 1870. Alias/AKA: "Lizzie".

Obituary: Lessie M. Altom Duke was born May 5th, 1869, and departed this life November 27th, 1940, making her stay on earth 71 years, six months and 22 days. She was the daughter of the late David G. and Sarah Altom. She was married to J.N. Duke in 1891. He preceded her to the grave 10 months and 21 days [ago]. To this union were born seven children namely: Charles Carless, Luther A., and Audry M. Duke, Mrs. Azilee Wilkins, Dahnie Lewis and Odell Brewer, all of Darden; one son, Alton, preceded her to the grave 25 years ago. There are left to mourn her departure, six children, 26 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; also, three stepdaughters, Mrs. Daisy Moore, Wildersville; Pearl Wood, Darden; Mary Murren, Jackson; four brothers, Slyvestin Altom, Wildersville; David G. Altom, Lexington; Oscar Altom, Jackson; Jimmy Altom, Fulton, Ky.; two sisters, Mrs. Viola Roberts, Henderson, Dora Scott, Jackson, besides a host of relatives and friends. She professed faith in Christ in early womanhood and united with Mt. Ararat Missionary Baptist Church and lived a consistent member until death. A loving mother, a true friend, a faithful Christian has gone to her reward.



In 1891 when Lizzie M. was 21, she married James Newton DUKE. Born on 8 Feb 1862 in Henderson County, Tennessee. At the age of 77, James Newton died in Darden, Henderson County, Tennessee on 7 Jan 1940.

They had the following children:

26. Martha Viola ALTOM. Born on 27 Nov 1875 in Henderson County, Tennessee. At the age of 78, Martha Viola died on 17 May 1954. Resided in District 6, Chester County, Tennessee in 1930. Resided in Henderson, Chester County, Tennessee in 1940.

On 20 Feb 1898 when Martha Viola was 22, she married George W. ROBERTS, son of John Duncan ROBERTS Senior (5 May 1833-27 Dec 1922) & Rebecca BURTON (10 Sep 1838-20 May 1907). Born in 1873 in Henderson County, Tennessee. Resided in Henderson, Chester County, Tennessee in 1923. Resided in District 6, Chester County, Tennessee in 1930.

They had the following children:
i. John Walter. Born on 6 Sep 1902 in Henderson County, Tennessee.

In 1923 Walter Roberts, a native Henderson Countian, was hired by Gibson County Superintendent F. L. Browning (brother to former Governor Gordon Browning) to be principal of Medina High School. He also taught five classes and coached the new game of basketball. During one period five members of his family were teaching school. Mr. Roberts was senior class president and valedictorian of the class of 1922 at what is now known as Freed Hardeman University.



ii. Flora Blanche. Born in 1900 in Henderson County, Tennessee. Resided in District 6, Chester County, Tennessee in 1930.

iii. Sarah Rebecca.

iv. Georgia Crockett. Born in 1905 in Henderson County, Tennessee. Resided in District 6, Chester County, Tennessee in 1930.

v. Milton. Born in 1908 in Henderson County, Tennessee. Resided in District 6, Chester County, Tennessee in 1930.

vi. Charles Clifton. Born in 1912 in Henderson County, Tennessee. Resided in District 6, Chester County, Tennessee in 1930.

vii. Lyman Lanoice. Born in 1919 in Chester County, Tennessee. Resided in District 6, Chester County, Tennessee in 1930.


27. Eudora Hill ALTOM. Born on 12 Jul 1880. At the age of 91, Eudora Hill died on 3 Dec 1971.

Eudora Hill married John Bradley SCOTT.

They had one child:
62 i. Lydia (1899-1984)

28. William Oscar ALTOM. Born on 21 Jul 1886.

On 19 Feb 1911 when William Oscar was 24, he married Annie Cal Donie ROBERTS (48) , daughter of James William ROBERTS (1863-) & Rebecca Jane SMALL (19) (3 Apr 1865-9 Nov 1904). Born on 28 Sep 1888 in Henderson County, Tennessee. At the age of 28, Annie Cal Donie died on 12 Mar 1917. Alias/AKA: "Callie".

They had the following children:
i. J.D.. Born on 14 Mar 1912 in Henderson County, Tennessee.

On 1 Apr 1933 when J.D. was 21, he first married Volie RICKARD.

On 25 Dec 1957 when J.D. was 45, he second married Florence Mae BICKERSTAFF.

ii. Robert. Born on 6 May 1913. Robert died on 6 May 1913.

63 iii. Willliam Curtis (1915-)
iv. Opal Mae. Born on 30 May 1916 in Henderson County, Tennessee.

On 24 Dec 1936 when Opal Mae was 20, she married John W. JARRETT.


29. James R. ALTOM. Born on 27 Feb 1890. At the age of 58, James R. died in 1949. Buried in 1949 in Old Bethel Cemetery, Henderson County, Tennessee. Resided in Fulton, Kentucky in 1940. Alias/AKA: "Jimmy".

James R. married Sofie WADLEY. Born in 1894. At the age of 82, Sofie died in 1976. Buried in 1976 in Old Bethel Cemetery, Henderson County, Tennessee.

They had the following children:
i. Infant. Born on 24 Feb 1914. Infant died on 24 Feb 1914. Buried in Feb 1914 in Old Bethel Cemetery, Henderson County, Tennessee.

ii. Waymon Crockett. Born on 17 Nov 1919. At the age of 61, Waymon Crockett died on 16 Sep 1981. Buried in Sep 1981 in Old Bethel Cemetery, Henderson County, Tennessee.
